Ping Pong and Pebble Beach
I have performed many table tennis exhibtions before but performing at the 18th Hole of the infamous Pebble Beach Resort has to be one of the most memorable for sure. With my "ace in the hole" son Austin who just turned 13, he is already a veteran having performed more than 100 shows with me and having Four National Titles under his belt. One of the challenges was from Keynote Speaker and former #1 World Tennis player Tracy Austin. Although Tracy had great strokes, she was still no match for Austin's lightning fast reflexes.
Former World #1 Tennis Champion Tracy Austin with Austin Preiss Austin and I were hosted at a $700 a night room at the Spanish Bay resort, just a few minutes from the Pebble Beach Clubhouse. Besides the beds being ultra comfortable, snacks and drinks were complimentary, as well as the brand new Lexus Convertible that was offered to us for the scenic views through the famous 17 mile drive to Carmel. With the sun setting just beyond the 18th hole, and the Martinis Bar just beyond the glass partisian seperating the table tennis table from the 18th hole, Austin and I played more than 100 challengers to an 11 point game. When not taking on challengers Austin and I demonstrated some our trick shots which included serving the ball from 40 feet away from the table, behind the back shots, and playing with three balls at one time. This was the 3rd time that I have performed for this delightful group. One of the challengers, Jackson of Manhattan, NY had been practicing his skills at home readying himself for this event. Jackson took on Austin to no avail, but was thrilled to score 7 points against the young future Olympian. (Of course Austin was nice to him!) It has been more than five years now since Austin has lost a challenge to the public during our table tennis promotions. This means Austin was 8 years of age the last time he lost a game during a public challenge.
I want to thank Paul Arena Sports Promotions and Newgy Industries for providing paddles for this event, and also Stefan, the Pebble Beach restaurant manager for the wonderful food and drink that they provided to us during our presentation. I just wonder how can a table tennis exhibition get better than this! Scott Preiss US National Table Tennis Coach and Trainer/Entertainer
